Chapter 7

Seated on the bridge of the Yossa, Zann stared at his commander on the video comm. He hadn’t seen or heard from the wise, elderly warrior in quite some time, and it pleased Zann that the older male looked well.

“I am glad we are finally able to communicate,” Zann said. He hadn’t spoken directly to the commander since he’d left New Vaxx on his mission to track down and kill Freuth. During an active mission, only vital information was transmitted between members of a unit, to prevent Vaxxlian enemies from intercepting confidential messages.

“It is good to see your face,” Commander Vikkor said.

“What is the status of the other hunters in my unit?” Zann asked. “Freuth claimed he killed all nine of my comrades.” Each hunter unit was made of up of ten of the strongest, most skilled Vaxxlian warriors, and though they often worked alone, there were times in the past when the ten of them had assembled to work together. He respected the nine hunters from his unit and prayed Freuth had been lying, but the dark look in Commander Vikkor’s eyes put him on edge.

“Unfortunately, five of their bodies have been recovered. The other four are missing and presumed dead.”

Zann cursed under his breath and his hands curled into fists. Freuth’s exact location hadn’t been known at the time his unit was dispatched to track the traitor down, or the ten of them would’ve confronted the former warrior together. The life expectancy of a hunter wasn’t long and each male on his unit knew and agreed to the risks before accepting a mission, but Zann still mourned the loss of his comrades.

“It is my hope that the skills of the hunters are not needed for a long time,” the commander said. “The war is over. All our enemies are dead or driven to the far reaches of known space. Once you return to New Vaxx, you will help me select nine males to replace those we have lost. We will rebuild our unit of hunters, while praying to the Star God the day never comes when such skills are needed again.”

“It would be my honor to assist you in rebuilding our unit, Commander,” Zann said, though he would never forget the nine skilled hunters who were lost. If only Zann had reached Freuth first. But the traitor had been good at hiding, quick to move from place to place, and had sent out decoy transmissions to Irrcons from several different locations, making it impossible to guess where he really was at any given time. But at least he was dead now. At least he couldn’t do anything more to hurt the Vaxxlian people, the very people the disgraced warrior turned traitor should have given his life to protect.

“When you find a mate and return to New Vaxx, we will begin immediately.”

“I have found a human female and we’ve already mated,” Zann said, “however, we are not headed straight back to New Vaxx. The Tarrkollians have placed a bounty on her head and I intend to help her clear her name.
